Behold the Power of the Lemon!
This February, inspired by a bucket full of lemons my awesome neighbor dropped off this past weekend from their lemon tree, I have a new goal: try to get my little munchkins to start drinking fresh lemonade. It is a great habit I would like to instill in them from this early age...
Why? Well, lemons are really, truly, one of natures superfoods. They are LEGIT!
Among the reasons these little, refreshening, bright yellow fruits are so amazing:
They are one of the most alkaline-forming foods; great for balancing the pH of our body
Great source of vitamin C to fight off nasty colds and flu's
Great liver detoxifier
Lemons contain 22 anti-cancer compounds, including naturally occurring limonene; oil which slows or halts the growth of cancer tumors in animals and flavonol glycosides which stop cell division in cancer cell
When added to warm water, lemons interact with enzymes in your body to stimulate the production of gastric juices, thus aiding in digestion
Vitamin C and the anti inflamatory properties of lemons help battle sore throats (at home we drink warm water, lemon and a little honey to help with our sore throats and colds)
The Vitamin C in lemons also is said to help keep skin clear. Lemon water purges toxins from the blood which helps keep skin clear as well
Due to its high potassium content, some people claim that lemon water can help fight off depression and anxiety. The potassium also stimulates brain and nerve function and helps control blood pressure
For pregnant mamas, The American Pregnancy Association advises that consuming and even smelling lemons can help relieve morning sickness
