Organic Nursing Clothes for Pregnancy and Beyond
When I was preparing for the arrival of my baby I made sure I had her organic mattress, organic bed linens, organic onesies and pjs, among other things, lined up for her arrival. I new the importance of making sure that everything that would come into contact with her, particularly for long periods of time, would not expose her to potentially harmful chemicals.
Once she arrived I myself took special care to continue to use only the purest non-toxic products on myself: after all she would be in close contact with my own skin and hair for extended periods of time. Breast feeding, cuddling, baby carrying all place your tiny baby into close contact with any product you use on yourself. This included shampoo, body wash, moisturizer and even makeup that would be safe for babies to babble on, smell and lay on for hours every day. All of this was relatively easy to source and, really, a continuation of what I had been doing during pregnancy since toxins and products mom's use or are exposed to can cross the placenta and make their way to the baby during fetal development. However there was one space that baby would come into close contact with, for hours a day, and that I had a really really hard time sourcing: nursing friendly clothes.
While I try to focus on natural fabrics like cotton, wool & cashmere for my own cloths, I do not exclusively buy organic clothing for myself. It is sometimes hard to source and/or not always as stylish (although this is getting better!). However, once I had baby, I soon realized what a potentially major route of exposure my own clothes could be for my baby. I love snuggling with my baby, I love baby carrying with and without a carrier, I love when she falls asleep on my shoulder, I love when she starts sucking on my shoulder and leaves behind a whole lot of baby saliva and I love when she burries her head into my top signaling she is tired. While she is doing all of this, however, she is also in very, very close contact with my own clothings. This is when I realized that it wasn't just her clothes that should be organic but my clothes during this stage of motherhood should be safe too.
Yet, it was still surprisingly hard to source. As a nursing mother, lets face it, there is not a lot of stylish nursing friendly clothing out there, and there is even less organic stylish , nursing friendly clothing.
One of the first companies I came across was Ellie and Becca, a mama owned company that just “gets” what I was looking for! They make more than just organic clothings designed for nursing mamas. They use organic Liberty fabrics which are the epitome of femininity. Their designs are modern and stylish; you can dress them up or dress them down and its clothing that we can wear beyond the nursing stage- a far cry from most nursing dresses and tops that are unstylish and shapeless, obviously designed for nursing.
And most importantly, I can wear it and feel completely at ease when carrying my baby.
